The Great Project of Awareness

" I CARRY AN ECOLOGICAL CALENDAR IN MY BODY. TUNING IN, I FEEL THE TUG OF THE MOON AND THE EDDIES OF HEAT WAVES AND COLD SNAPS SWIRLING IN MY VEINS."

On the farm from dawn to dusk, I meet the animal body of the earth. In the morning she exhales—dewy—as she rises from sleep. Warming while the sun climbs above her, she animates with the swell of noisy insects and birdsongs. We move together throughout the day, she and I, as crops turn toward the light or droop in the midday heat. Sometimes I do the watering, other times she takes a turn. The weeding is left to me; she’s focused on the growing. As we approach evening, her body cools and hums. Pockets of damp, chilly air nestle into the crooks of the ravine. Nighthawks dart from rooftop to oak branch and bats sweep across the bluing twilight. Together, we rest before rising again.
